About Brisbane Seniors On Line

The Establishment of Brisbane Seniors Online Inc.
BSOL was launched in 2000. This was a brilliant example of how, with the energy and enthusiasm of dedicated people, a very appropriate solution could be found to the important issue of computer education for seniors.
How did it all start?

It all started in Mt Gravatt when a Centrelink social worker had a great idea. “Why not get computer literate older people to share their knowledge with other seniors who want to learn basic computing?”

Brisbane City Council (BCC) Community Development workers, through various other seniors' projects, had also recognised the demand for people over 50 to learn computer skills. A steering committee was formed and BSOL was born. The committee then moved to establish an organisation to service all of Brisbane, not just the Mt Gravatt area.
As one can imagine, developing the infrastructure for an organisation capable of offering its services to the 300,000 plus people in Brisbane who are over 50 years of age, amounts to a massive amount of work!

This aside, the new BSOL grew with the assistance of the BCC and Centrelink. Office space in the City Hall was organised with access to the 50 Plus computer training centre.

BSOL was off and running! Hubs were developed in the north, south, east, west plus the central areas of Brisbane, each with a hub coordinator with a role to match learners to voluntary mentors in their area. BSOL's services were gradually promoted through BCC libraries and slowly but surely membership began to build. A website was then developed through the City Council resources.

BSOL was officially launched by then Councillor David Hinchliffe at a ceremony held on Friday 25th October 2002 in the Sherwood Room at City Hall.

Our Mission
Our mission is to provide seniors of the Greater Brisbane Area with computer literacy and support whilst promoting social and recreational activities.

The Hubs
As earlier explained, to simplify the administration of mentors and learners, we have divided our coverage area into geographical areas (hubs), each Hub under the control of a hub coordinator.

What do we provide:

• Basic Computer Education in a seniors home.
• Selected tuition in a class situation.
• More advanced tutoring (ebay, social networking, photography and more .. this list is growing driven by technology.)
• Ongoing support for financial members.

Whilst BSOL have over 1200 learners Brisbane wide, we still have plenty of room for more, so all seniors are very welcome to join us. Volunteer helpers are also welcome to assist us with administrative matters in our City Office & Training Centre.

Need more advice. Please contact BSOL on 0732106983.

All mentors and the BSOL management team are volunteers. BSOL is a not for profit organisation.
