Mature Jacarandas Planted in New Farm Park

10 December, 2008

The second stage of Jacaranda replacement plantings has begun in New Farm Park today, following the removal of decayed trees earlier this year.

Fourteen semi-mature ex-ground stock Jacarandas are being planted in locations adjacent to the New Farm Park ring road.

Environment, Parks and Sustainability Chair Peter Matic said Council’s focus was to get on with replacing all the trees removed.

“It was heartbreaking to remove the diseased trees from the park in the first place, but we had to put the safety of residents first,” Cr Matic said.

“That’s why we’re getting on with replanting to return the park back to its former glory as one of the most popular and stunning parks in Brisbane.”

The six-metre replacement jacarandas are being planted to honour New Farm Park’s 1914 landscape plan with 100 jacarandas around the New Farm Park Ring Road.

Cr Matic said the works would cause minimal disruption to users of the park and adjoining precincts.

Traffic controllers will manage all traffic flows through the park for the duration of the works, which are expected to continue until Friday December 19.

“I’d like to thank residents for their patience during this whole period,” Cr Matic said.

The decay was caused by a combination of fungal pathogens such as Phellinus noxious, old age, and stress from the drought and storm damage.
