Southside residents to take advantage of free waste disposal

23 February, 2017

Brisbane City Council is giving residents the chance to dispose of any hazardous household waste items free of charge at one of Council’s dedicated Resource Recovery Centres on 4 March.

Field Services Chairman Peter Matic invited residents to take advantage of the free offer, which allowed residents to safely dispose of chemicals not usually accepted at Councils Resource Recovery facilities.

“Council is committed to delivering on the ground support for residents while ensuring Brisbane is clean, green and sustainable, and this event is a great opportunity for residents to clear any hazardous materials,” Cr Matic said.

“Everyday products such as bleach and cleaning solvents can be flammable, toxic, corrosive or explosive if they are not disposed safely after use, this can potentially cause fires in bins or garbage trucks and present serious hazards for trucks drivers.

“Almost 10 tonnes of hazardous waste has already been collected during the 2016-2017 financial year through this initiative, which helps to protect Brisbane’s bushland and waterways.

“It’s also a timely reminder for residents to ensure hazardous materials are stored correctly around the home to ensure the safety of your family, neighbours and local community

Residents can drop off the following items for free during the special collection on Saturday 4 March from 8am to 3pm:
• Acids
• Fire extinguishers
• Herbicides
• Petrol
• Pesticides
• Pool chemicals
• Solvents

Hazardous waste quantities are limited to 20 litres of each substance per household. All items must be presented in a disposal container and waste from commercial operators will not be accepted.

Residents can also download Council’s award winning ‘Brisbane Bin and Recycling’ app from the App Store or Google Play to receive free notifications about future free hazardous waste events in their local area.

For more information on household hazardous waste disposal, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or call Council on (07) 3403 8888.
