Brisbane Square Library celebrates 10th anniversary

20 January, 2017

Brisbane City Council’s flagship library in the heart of the CBD is today celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Lifestyle and Community Services Chairman Cr Matthew Bourke said the popular City central library was officially opened on 19 January 2007 and has been one of the most popular libraries across Brisbane since this time.

“Brisbane Square Library is our largest library facility at 4,500 square metres and has 590,000 visitors a year,” Cr Bourke said.

“Ten years ago, when we opened the Brisbane Square Library, it was the first of its kind to engage new technologies that made libraries much more than places to borrow books, but rather interactive, family-friendly community spaces.

“A number of innovative features and services first introduced to Brisbane Square, have now become standard at libraries across the city, including:
• Automated book sorting robot
• News lounge with live news, the interactive ‘City Zoo’ space with console gaming and flat screens televising sporting events and the sound and vision multimedia lounge featuring listening posts and DVD viewing pods
• Study rooms, meeting rooms, quiet areas and event spaces
• Public access internet computers with an online customer booking system, wireless hotspots for accessing the internet and an 18-seat learning lounge for customer training sessions
• The Children’s Library.”

Cr Bourke said during the past ten years, the library had hosted 8.3 million visits from residents and visitors alike.

“Over the last decade there have also been 7.3 million loans from the Brisbane Square Library, with 200,526 people attending the library’s programs and events,” he said.

“The library supports Council’s vision of creating vibrant hubs where the community can access services, learn, connect and be social.”

“On the tenth anniversary of the library, this is a great opportunity for residents to visit Brisbane Square Library and take advantage of the books, magazines, music, digital publications, toys, computers and other resources on offer at Council libraries.
