Lord Mayor calls for local hero nominations

30 September, 2016

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is calling on the local Brisbane community to nominate worthy individuals and community groups for the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards.

Cr Quirk said the annual awards celebrate Brisbane’s local unsung heroes and recognise the significant work they do to help others.

“As Lord Mayor, I am privileged to meet many residents who make an extraordinary contribution to local communities right across this city,” Cr Quirk said.

“With more than 2 million people calling Brisbane home, there’s no doubt our city is a great place to live, but it’s our residents who make Brisbane what it is.

“At any given time, there are thousands of residents working to make Brisbane an even better place to live for us all, whether it’s improving our natural environment, helping others less fortunate or working with children, the elderly or people with disabilities.

“These awards are about taking the time to ensure special people are appropriately recognised for their efforts and achievements.

“These unique individuals have each in their own way, selflessly reached out to others in our community.

“In doing so they not only make a significant difference to the lives of individuals, but also help to enrich our city.”

Cr Quirk said there were 10 award categories for the 2017 Awards.
• Citizen of the Year
• Senior Citizen of the Year
• Young Citizen of the Year
• Corporate Citizen of the Year
• Community Event of the Year
• Australia Day Cultural/Arts Award
• Australia Day Sports Award
• Australia Day Achievement Awards
• Lord Mayor’s Green Heart Award – Individual
• Lord Mayor’s Green Heart Award – Organisation

“I encourage people to take the time to nominate these quiet achievers who would otherwise go unnoticed in our busy lives, and tell us why they should win an Australia Day Award,” he said.

All nominees must be Australian citizens and reside within the City of Brisbane at the time of nomination. Nominations close at 5pm on Monday, 7 November 2016.
