Council serves up an ace with the Brisbane International CityCat

Brisbane City Council has served up an ace Team Brisbane CityCat with Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner unveiling CityCat Ya-wa-gara’s new look which celebrates the 2016 Brisbane International.

Cr Schrinner joined Grand Slam champion and World Number Three Roger Federer to officially launch Ya-wa-gara’s new look today, which is the sixth to be revamped in a decorative skin depicting a popular sporting team as part of Council’s Team Brisbane campaign.

“The 26-tonne catamaran is kitted out with the yellow, white and blue Brisbane International colouring and the white and aqua Queensland Tourism ‘It’s Live! In Queensland’ logo to promote the competition, which runs from January 3-10 at the Queensland Tennis Centre, Tennyson,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Ya-wa-gara is named after the Aboriginal name for Breakfast Creek and will join the fleet of Team Brisbane CityCats celebrating teams such as Brisbane Heat, Brisbane Broncos, Queensland Firebirds and the Brisbane Lions.

“Its top speed is 25 knots or 45 kilometres per hour – almost 200kph slower than Federer’s serve.

“Ya-wa-gara’s new wrap is right on the ball for Team Brisbane and I’m confident it will get energize a new level of excitement for the upcoming Brisbane International.”

Brisbane International Tournament Director Cameron Pearson said the tournament was an iconic event for Brisbane.

“It’s exciting to be teaming up with another great Brisbane icon this summer – every January Brisbane International takes over the city and in 2016 we’re looking forward to extending our presence to the Brisbane River,” Mr Pearson said.

“The world’s best tennis players love competing in Queensland and the Brisbane International CityCat adds to the atmosphere and excitement of the event.”

The new wave of decorated CityCats will continue through to mid-year, with upcoming unique wraps to celebrate the Queensland Reds following the recently unveiled Brisbane Heat-themed CityCat and Brisbane Bandits-themed CityCat.

Cr Schrinner said it wasn’t too late for Brisbane locals to get involved with Council’s Team Brisbane CityCat Design Competition.

“Council is calling on all residents to design a unique skin that depicts the words ‘Team Brisbane’ and celebrates our great city,” he said.

“The winning design chosen by an expert panel of judges will be emblazoned on one of our CityCat vessels for the next few years.

Residents have until January 15 to enter, so there is still plenty of time to get creative and come up with an original design that will take pride of place in the fleet.”
