Brisbane to turn purple for the mighty Firebirds

22 June, 2015

The Brisbane CBD will come alive next Saturday with a public celebration marking the Mission Queensland Firebirds ANZ Championship victory.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said Brisbane was proud of the Firebirds’ fantastic win against their opponents from south of the border, the New South Wales Swifts this afternoon.

“The Queensland Firebirds delivered a fantastic result, trumping the New South Wales Swifts 57 to 56, and taking out the trans-Tasman netball championship in front of a sellout crowd,” Cr Quirk said.

“To celebrate this amazing feat, Brisbane will be splashed with purple and yellow on June 27, with the victors leading fans and supporters through the streets of the CBD as part of a public celebration.”

The parade will commence at 12:25pm on Saturday 27th June, and will proceed along Albert Street from King George Square, travel up Queen Street Mall, and finish at Redacliff Place with a special presentation at 1:00pm.

Cr Quirk said the team would be presented with certificates of appreciation, and the Story Bridge would tonight shine purple to honour the team.

“Brisbane is proud of its sporting greats, and after 13 straight wins, the Firebirds are more than deserving of special recognition,” he said.

“I encourage everyone to line the streets of the CBD on June 27 to get behind the team and cheer them on one more time.”

Earlier this month Cr Quirk unveiled the 21st CityCat to join the fleet, which is decked out in a unique Firebirds livery.

“Sport is an integral part of our identity, so we are delighted to display the iconic Queensland Firebirds livery on Gilwunpa to show the world how proud we are of our prestigious sporting heritage,” he said.

“This striking skin is a fitting tribute to our state’s powerhouse netball team, the Mission Queensland Firebirds who have an outstanding record of achievements within the ANZ Championship.
