Paniyiri comes to town

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is inviting residents to go on a journey of Greek culture as Paniyiri returns to Brisbane on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May.

The Lord Mayor said Paniyiri is a celebration of all things Greek with traditional dance, music and food rich in colour and passion on offer.

“This year’s event is expected to be bigger and better than ever with more than 50,000 people expected to flock to Musgrave Park for the annual event,” he said.

“There will be more than 30 food stalls at this event showcasing the tastes, recipes and food secrets from all corners of Greece.

“Famous Greek dances, the ‘Zorba’, ‘Sirto’, ‘Kalamatiano’ and ‘Sousta’ will be performed to traditional music on the main stage in a wonderful cultural celebration.”

Cr Quirk said the event, which is now in its 39th year, is a great way for the whole family to celebrate all things Greek.

“Musgrave Park will be a hive of activity over the weekend with over 20 hours of entertainment including, the return of Greek Dancing with the Stars, grape stomping, olive and honey puff eating competitions and Hellenic dancing,” Cr Quirk said.

“The Greek Club will be popular over the weekend with popular traditional Greek cooking demonstrations featuring Queensland’s culinary greats, plus the screening of cultural films and tours of the Greek Orthodox Church to the beautiful sounds of the Byzantine Choir.

“Events, like Paniyiri, contribute to my vision for a community that is innovative and creative with opportunities to actively participate in the cultural life of our diverse and vibrant city.”
