Young photographers capture a cleaner, greener future for Brisbane

05 May, 2015

Brisbane’s budding photographers are being encouraged to jump behind the lens and capture the city’s environmental wonders as part of the Lord Mayor’s Young Environmental Photographer of the Year 2015 competition.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the annual competition helped nurture the creative talents of the city’s youth, while showcasing Brisbane as one of Australia’s most green and sustainable cities.

“We are challenging Brisbane students to capture a creative, powerful and emotive image inspiring action to enjoy and protect Brisbane’s beautiful environment,” Cr Quirk said.

“Primary and secondary school students are invited to pull out a camera and capture unique perspectives of this year’s theme, My City- My Future.

“This can be anything from natural areas, through to sustainable technologies in action, and I look forward to seeing the creative pieces produced by Brisbane’s students who are capturing what it means to live in our beautiful clean, green city.”

This year’s categories for secondary school students are:
• My Brisbane, My Passion – uniquely Brisbane, the beauty of our natural areas
• Innovation for our future – sustainability in action
• Consume less, share more – communities making a difference

This year’s categories for primary schools are:
• Play – fun in nature
• Move – taking a journey
• Grow – cultivating a change

The school with the most entries will also receive a trophy and a prize pack valued at $2000.

Cr Quirk said finalists would be chosen by the public through Council’s Young Brisbane Facebook page.

“From the finalists, a panel of judges will choose an overall winner across the competition, a first place runner-up and a winner from each category,” he said.
“Finalists’ photographs will be displayed from 23 June - 17 July at the Collectors Café, Queensland Museum, King George Square, and the Brisbane Square Library.”

All winners will receive a trophy and prize pack, which includes photographic equipment and workshop vouchers of up to $2000 in value.

Primary school categories are to be submitted via www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/greenheartschools and secondary school categories are to be submitted via Council’s Young Brisbane Facebook at www.facebook.com/youngpeoplebrisbane

The competition is open for entries from Monday 4 May until Saturday 23 May.
