Council wheels out ‘Bruce the Brissie Bus’

19 March, 2015

Brisbane City Council is making public transport more approachable and fun to even its youngest commuters, with the launch of an educational children’s book Bruce the Brissie Bus.

Public and Active Transport Chairman Councillor Peter Matic today read the exciting new book to school children at Carindale Library.

Cr Matic said that the book featured colourful hand-drawn illustrations from school students across Brisbane. He said Council held a competition amongst the participating Active School Travel schools for the illustrations, with 12 drawings selected from a total of 107 entries.

“The book is a fun and engaging way of informing kids about Council’s bus services, telling the story of a day in the life of a Brisbane bus through the eyes of the main character, Bruce the Bus,” Cr Matic said.

“Bruce the Brissie Bus is a fantastic way to start young with important educational messages about sustainable transport options as part of Council’s commitment to making Brisbane a clean and green city.

“It’s about getting kids talking about our modern buses and friendly bus drivers, so that they are familiar and comfortable next time they catch a bus and have a positive experience.

“By increasing kids’ awareness of Brisbane Transport’s services, we can help increase the uptake of sustainable transport options, helping to reduce congestion on our roads.”

Cr Matic said Council would distribute 5000 copies of the book to participating schools and Council libraries, and it would also be available on Council’s website as an online flip-book.

“The winning illustrators will be receiving their own special copies as a thank you for their contribution, and each participating school would receive a printed montage of all entries provided by their students.”

Cr Matic said once kids had read the book, it would add new context for the children when they catch the school bus.

The Bruce the Brissie Bus book is an educational Brisbane Transport project which has been offset by sponsorship provided by Volgren and Volvo bus manufacturers.
