Get fit for free this Summer in Brisbane

16 February, 2015

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is refreshing Brisbane residents exercise routines with Council’s Active Parks program in more than 50 local parks across Brisbane.

The Lord Mayor said residents could take part in a range of activities, from aqua fitness classes and gardening workshops, to the more adventurous recreational tree climbing and kayaking.

“Active Parks is a series of group classes suitable for all fitness levels and abilities with classes including Tai Chi, Pilates, boxing and mums and bubs fitness,” Cr Quirk said.

“Each week, a variety of free and low-cost outdoor activities are held across Council’s local parks and facilities as part of my vision for an active and healthy city.”

“Recent additions to the program include family bike skills workshops, bicycle maintenance for women, wheelchair skills program and skateboard coaching.”

In 2014, 50,000 residents took part in 3,697 sessions provided by Council.

Other popular fitness programs from Council include the GOLD (Growing Older and Living Dangerously) program for residents aged 50 years and over as well as the GOLD n’ kids program providing grandparents with activities to enjoy with their grandchildren.

Cr Quirk said Council also provided innovative and easy to use outdoor fitness equipment at more than 80 parks across the city.

“Some parks include simple static exercise equipment designed for exercises like sit-ups and chin-ups, while other parks feature more interactive and dynamic equipment like rowers and elliptical training machines,” Cr Quirk.

“The biggest advantage of our outdoor gyms is that they are free and accessible to everyone, with no membership fees required.

“Now is a great time to reassess your fitness goals and with so many opportunities on offer to take advantage the city’s outdoor gyms and Active Parks session can be part of everyone’s healthy and active lifestyles.”
