South Bank transformed into Asian pop dance party

16 February, 2015

For one night only, fans of cosplay, anime and Asian pop will converge on South Bank’s cultural forecourt for this year’s Neon Pop event on Saturday 28 February from 4-9pm.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the high-energy event was a celebration of contemporary Asian culture.

“Neon Pop celebrates the wonderful and eccentric street culture of cosplay and anime fandom with a free youth culture event under the stars to the live tunes of local and Asian DJs,” Cr Quirk said.

“Young people are encouraged to dress up as their favourite anime character to dance the night away to the live tunes from Tigermoth, DJ Lame and DJ Green Nose.

“There will be food and drink available to purchase, pop-up performances including an appearance from the stilt walking Tokyo Girls and the chance to participate in a balloon art installation from Twisted Designs.”

Neon Pop is part of this year’s BrisAsia Festival which celebrates Brisbane’s connection with traditional and contemporary Asian culture.

With a program of events running from Friday 6 February to Sunday 1 March, this year’s BrisAsia Festival incorporates popular events, such as, Chinese Lunar New Year, the Amigurumi Toyland art installation, Yum Chat and Taste of Asia.

Cr Quirk said the popularity of events like Neon Pop as part of the BrisAsia Festival, highlighted Brisbane as a vibrant, creative and multicultural city.

“Council has a strong history of supporting music, performance and multicultural events such as BrisAsia, the Valley Fiesta and Diwali Festival,” Cr Quirk said.

“The BrisAsia Festival contributes to the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of the whole community. It helps realise our vision of a vibrant, creative city by delivering high quality cultural, arts and entertainment programs across Brisbane city and suburbs.”

“I encourage Brisbane residents to get out and experience the unique events on offer as part of the BrisAsia Festival.”
