Council service closures over Christmas

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is keeping residents informed about operating hours for a number of Brisbane City Council services and venues as the holidays draw closer.

Cr Quirk said while it is a time for celebrations and fun, residents should check the website or call Council if they are planning to use services over the Christmas and New Year period.

“If residents are planning to use public transport over this time, I encourage you to plan ahead as some services will be closed over the public holidays,” he said.

“To assist over the festive season, Council will be operating late night bus services on Friday and Saturday nights.

“Other services will be closed or operate differently over this period however, all information is available on the Council website or by calling the Contact Centre.”

Residents will be able to contact Council’s Contact Centre 24 hours a day, every day over the Christmas period on (07) 3403 8888.

Bus and ferry services
Additional late night bus services will operate on 19 and 20 December and on New Year’s Eve. Brisbane Transport will operate a Sunday timetable on Christmas Day and Boxing Day with no NightLink services. A Sunday timetable will also operate on New Year’s Day.

On 25 December 2014, CityCats will operate every 30 minutes. Normal public holiday timetables will apply to CityHopper services and there will be some changes to cross river services. The normal public holiday timetable will apply on Boxing Day.

On New Year’s Eve, there will be additional CityCat services from 6pm, with last services departing at around 1.30am. There will be some disruptions due to firework displays between approximately 8.20pm-8.50pm and 11.50pm-12.15am.

On 1 January, normal public holiday timetable will apply. Sydney Street ferry terminal will close from 5 January for upgrade works.

Waste collection
Bins will be serviced on public holidays including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Residents should put bins out the night before as collections will start from 5am on Christmas day to help the drivers get back to festivities with their families.

Residents can check their day of service by downloading Council’s free Brisbane Bin and Recycling app, or by using Council’s online bin collection calendar.

Council’s transfer stations are open from 6.30am to 5.45pm every day of the year, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

All 33 Council libraries will be closed on the Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day public holidays. Check with your local library for their operating hours or visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/libraries.

All Council pools are closed on Christmas Day, but will be open every other day over the hot summer months.

City venues
The Planetarium is usually open from Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays. During the Christmas/New Year period it will be closed on 25th and 26th December as well as New Year’s Day.

Victoria Park Golf Complex and St Lucia Golf Links will be closed on Christmas Day but open on all other public holidays.

Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha remains open 365 days per year to the public. There is vehicle access within the Gardens on all weekdays except on public holidays and gates close to vehicle access inside the Gardens from 4pm on weekdays (not including public holidays when there is no vehicle access). There is no vehicle access on weekends and public holidays however, there are car parking facilities all year round.
