Council facilities help families stay cool this summer

Residents and visitors can take advantage of a great range of family-friendly activities this summer with Brisbane City Council’s air-conditioned facilities and venues to keep the fun high and the cost low.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said residents were encouraged to use Council’s facilities such as pools, libraries, the Brisbane Museum, and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium for free or low-cost options to stay cool this summer.

“Council has 20 swimming pools for fun and fitness as well as 33 libraries across the city with various classes and activities for residents to enjoy and stay cool in the warmer weather,” Cr Quirk said.

“The Museum of Brisbane located in City Hall is also open seven days a week with fascinating, free exhibits such as David Malouf and friends, The River: A history of Brisbane and Costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

“Families can also enjoy a show such as Moons: World of Mystery in the recently refurbished Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium skydome which is open throughout the week except for Mondays and public holidays.”

Cr Quirk said residents and visitors could take a few basic steps to care for their health and avoid illness during Brisbane’s summer heat conditions.

“I encourage residents to closely monitor those around them who are most at risk in extreme heat conditions such as children, the elderly and people with a chronic condition or illness,” he said.

“I also advise residents to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, avoid strenuous activities and stay indoors in cool or air-conditioned facilities.

“Those who do not have air conditioning and are unable to visit one of Council’s many air-conditioned facilities can keep their homes cool with curtains, shutters or awnings and open windows at night if safe to do so.”

Opening hours for Council’s pools, libraries and other venues are available via Council’s website.
