Lord Mayor tips another green waste weekend

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is giving Brisbane residents a second chance to dump their green waste, with the next free green waste tipping weekend to be held on 11 and 12 October.

The Lord Mayor said the upcoming green waste tipping opportunity followed a successful weekend in mid-September that saw 3295 residents offload 587 tonnes of green waste.

“Each year Council holds two free green waste tipping weekends to help Brisbane residents get ready for summer storm season by tidying up their yards,” Cr Quirk said.

“Loose tree branches, garden waste and lightweight garden items can become dangerous in high winds, damaging power lines and property, while blocked gutters can cause leaking roofs.

“The free green waste tipping weekends present the perfect opportunity to trim overhanging tree branches, prune shrubs, rake up bark, twigs and dried leaves from around your home, and clear gutters of leaf litter.

“Thunderstorms and flash flooding can occur without warning during our city’s warmer months and keeping a neat and tidy yard can be the difference between safety and disaster.

“For those who missed the first weekend, there’s still opportunity to tidy up and clear the yard of potential dangerous debris, and dispose of it free of charge at Council’s transfer stations.

“All you need to do is turn up with your trailer and drive on in – no tip vouchers required.

“I encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity to prepare for summer storms.”

Council’s transfer stations are open from 6.30am to 5.45pm and are located at:
• 1402 Nudgee Road, Nudgee;
• 360 Sherbrooke Road, Willawong;
• 101 Upper Kedron Road, Ferny Grove; and
• 728 Tilley Road, Chandler (opposite the Sleeman Sports Complex).

Large logs and branches are not accepted as green waste at Council’s transfer stations.

Residents can also apply for the fortnightly green waste recycling service which is an easy and affordable way to dispose of lawn clippings, prunings and leaves. Those who apply for a green waste bin during October will have the $30 sign-up fee waived. Green waste bins are available for a quarterly service fee of $18.63 which is billed through rates notices.
