Free green waste tipping to prepare for storm season

Brisbane City Council is offering residents a free green waste tipping weekend on Saturday, 20 and Sunday, 21 September, 6.30am - 5.45pm, in preparation for bushfire and storm season.

Field Services Chairman Councillor David McLachlan said the event allowed households to dispose of prunings from shrubs and trees, leaves and other natural garden waste for free at any Council transfer station.

Cr McLachlan said the initiative would assist home owners in safeguarding their properties through summer.

“The importance of being prepared for severe weather in Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate should not be underestimated,” Cr McLachlan said.

“During storm season, loose tree branches can become damaging missiles in high winds, bringing down power lines and causing property damage, while blocked gutters can cause leaking roofs.

“Thunderstorms and flash flooding can occur without warning during our city’s warmer months and keeping a neat and tidy yard can be the difference between safety and disaster.”

Cr McLachlan said the threat of bushfire could also be managed with good backyard practice.

“Residents whose homes back onto or are located near bushlands should be especially vigilant about removing undergrowth near buildings and in gardens,” he said.

“The free green waste tipping weekends present the perfect opportunity to trim overhanging tree branches, rake up bark, twigs and dried leaves from around your home, and clear gutters of leaf litter.”

Large logs and branches are not accepted as green waste at Council’s transfer stations.

Council’s transfer stations are open from 6.30am to 5.45pm and are located at:
• 1402 Nudgee Road, Nudgee.
• 360 Sherbrooke Road, Willawong.
• 101 Upper Kedron Road, Ferny Grove.
• 728 Tilley Road, Chandler (opposite the Sleeman Sports Complex).

Council will offer an additional free tipping weekend on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October for residents who cannot make the September dates.

Residents can also apply for the fortnightly green waste recycling service which is an easy and affordable way to dispose of lawn clippings, prunings and leaves. Those who apply for a green waste bin during October will have the $30 sign-up fee waived. Green waste bins are available for a quarterly service fee of $18.63 which is billed through rates notices.
