Council reaches motorbike parking milestone

19 September, 2014

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has delivered on his commitment to boost the number of free motorcycle parks in the inner-city by 400, with the 460th parking space now reached.

Infrastructure Chairman Councillor Adrian Schrinner said the new parking spaces were helping to reduce congestion in the inner-city.

“These parking spaces are part of the bigger picture to tackle traffic congestion across the city, aiding the millions of dollars Council is spending on arterial road upgrades, bikeway upgrades, major infrastructure projects, public transport investment and the left turn on red trial,” Cr Schrinner said.

“In 2012, the Lord Mayor committed to rolling out 400 additional free motorcycle parks over a four-year period to meet the growing demand and this milestone was reached 20 months ahead of schedule to meet the increased demand.

“As a result of delivering these motorcycle parks ahead of schedule, 500 free parking spaces will be installed in the inner-city by the end of this year, and 600 free spaces by the end of 2015, to continue tackling traffic congestion across the city.”

Cr Schrinner said the number of motorcycle parking spaces in the inner-city was now approximately 1,100.

The city’s newest 100 motorcycle spaces were installed at five locations across the CBD and Herston.
• QUT Gardens Point Road (84)
• QUT Gardens Point Road Revision A (12)
• QUT Gardens Point Road Revision B (16)
• Herston Road, Herston (14)
• QUT Gardens Point Road (33)

“Most of the additional parks were created by using free space on unused wide footpath area and on-street vacant kerbside spaces that were too small to be utilitsed for anything else, with no car spaces needing to be removed in this process,” Cr Schrinner said.

“These new sites are free and are available to Brisbane commuters, residents and tourists with no time restrictions, and will help satisfy growing demand throughout the city, benefitting all road users.

“With scooter and motorcycle registrations jumping nearly 30 per cent over the past five years, the provision of these designated areas for free motorcycle parking will provide major benefits to residents now and into the future.”
