Lord Mayor celebrates Brisbane’s most spotless suburb

19 August, 2014

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is today praising the latest littering achievements from across the city at the Spotless Suburbs Awards, with The Gap being crowned Brisbane’s most spotless suburb.

The Lord Mayor said the awards showcased the commitment and enthusiasm of community groups and schools to keep Brisbane litter-free.

“Our vision for Brisbane is to be Australia’s cleanest and greenest city, so it is fantastic to see we have so many residents contributing to the city’s amenity,” Cr Quirk said.

“I congratulate The Gap residents and the Payne Road State School community for their fantastic efforts in working together towards a clean and green city.

“It’s also important to recognise the wonderful contributions from the whole Brisbane community to keep our city clean, and this is reflected through our litter counts and observations of litter left on the ground.”

Cr Quirk said the efforts of residents were helping to build Brisbane’s reputation as a clean and green city.

“Being a spotless city is an achievement we hold in high esteem and it’s important to recognise the contribution that residents make to realise this,” Cr Quirk said.

“It is also more important than ever to continue on this path, as we move towards hosting the G20 summit in November and being able to present our city to the world.

“On a day-to-day basis however, I thank residents for doing the right thing with their rubbish, and I think these latest stats are something we can all be proud of.”

Cr Quirk said Brisbane City Council was recently named Australia’s best city for litter prevention in the 2013 Keep Australia Beautiful National Sustainable Cities awards.

“Council maintains a strategic approach to litter prevention through our educational initiatives and the installation of litter, public place recycling and cigarette butt bins as well as street cleansing and litter monitoring,” he said.

“We are leading the way in litter prevention programs having seen a 50 per cent reduction in littering within high traffic areas of the CBD and Fortitude Valley precincts over the past five years.

“This great result lends its hand as to why we have one of the lowest CBD littering rates in the country and is helping us build our reputation as being Australia’s cleanest and greenest city.”

The awards, which are now in their sixth year, are an initiative of Keep Queensland Beautiful in partnership with Council and SITA Australia to promote a cleaner, greener, litter-free city.

The Lord Mayor also announced the winners of the other categories including:
