Brisbane Best Parklands Come Alive

11 August, 2014

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is inviting residents to celebrate Brisbane’s four premier parklands and gardens with a weekend of celebrations on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August.

The Lord Mayor said this year’s event was filled with free events and activities for families, green thumbs and visitors who wanted to relax, enjoy the atmosphere and explore the parklands.

“Roma St Parklands will be the centre of this year’s celebrations with additional live music and activities at City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane Botanic Gardens and South Bank Parklands,” Cr Quirk said.

“Event highlights at Roma Street Parkland include a honey harvesting demonstration with the new resident honeybees, live music in The Amphitheatre and an interactive game zone for families on Celebration Lawn.

“Gardening enthusiasts can attend talks on growing organic vegetables, water conservation and bee keeping and young green thumbs can participate in activities with the Parkland’s new kids club Sprouts in the Park.

“Guided walks, live music and other activities will also be available in the City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane Botanic Gardens and South Bank Parklands.”

Cr Quirk said Parks Alive was developed by Roma Street Parkland in partnership with the Brisbane City Council and coincides with this year’s International Horticultural Congress conference.

“This event showcases Brisbane as an active, vibrant, New World City with a high standard of planning and subtropical design to the world’s horticultural experts,” Cr Quirk said.

“The festivities start early with the official opening of the Epicurious Garden in South Bank Parklands on Tuesday 19 August.

“A Pop Up Café will also open on the Albert Street Walkway serving food and drinks from the licenced bar on the Thursday and Friday evening before the event and during the weekend celebrations.”
