San Antonio Spurs players to wow Brisbane fans

18 July, 2014

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will welcome Australian NBA players Patty Mills and Aron Baynes to Brisbane this Saturday to celebrate the San Antonio Spurs stars’ NBA Championship Trophy win over Miami Heat.

The Lord Mayor said fans would have the chance to meet their home state basketball heroes and get up close to the famous NBA Championship Trophy.

“This is the first time the NBA Championship Trophy, otherwise known as the Larry O'Brien Trophy, has been outside of the United States, so this is a special chance for Brisbane fans to see the trophy in person,” Cr Quirk said.

“Fans will also have the opportunity to celebrate with Patty and Aron and chat to them about their international success.

“Each of the nine San Antonio Spurs players born outside of the US had the opportunity to take the NBA Championship Trophy to their home countries, and this is a wonderful opportunity for Brisbane fans to support our international sporting heroes.”

Cr Quirk said the players would travel to Baynes’ hometown of Cairns on Sunday and wrap up the tour in Mills’ ancestral Torres Strait Islands on Monday.

“The presentation will begin at 11.30am with a demonstration from Basketball QLD, followed by speeches, a question and answer session, then photos with fans,” Cr Quirk said.

“Patty and Aron are the third and fourth Australian players to win an NBA Championship which is an incredible feat.

“I encourage Brisbane residents to visit King George Square on Saturday to congratulate our home-grown athletes on their NBA Championship win.”

Brisbane is one of six stops on the tour which began in Melbourne on Wednesday.
