Bicentennial Bikeway link now complete

18 July, 2014

Brisbane City Council has completed construction of the $650,000 Western Creek Bridge replacement to connect the Bicentennial Bikeway between Lang Parade and Graham Street.

Local Councillor and Public and Active Transport Chairman, Cr Peter Matic said the new cyclist bridge would increase accessibility and connectivity of one of Brisbane’s key bicycle networks.

“The Bicentennial Bikeway is Brisbane’s busiest bikeway, carrying up to 6500 pedestrians and cyclists each day,” Cr Matic said.

‘This replacement bridge ensures that cyclists will retain a key link between the western suburbs and the CBD.

“Council has prioritised this important project to ensure the continued accessibility of our cycling network as the previous timber structure had begun to deteriorate.

“The existing bridge foundation was retained while the bridge deck and handrails were demolished and rebuilt as part of the project.”

Cr Matic said the project commenced in May and was completed in addition to the ongoing works that are taking place on the Bicentennial Bikeway.

“Stage 4 of the works on the Bicentennial Bikeway upgrade commenced in April this year to improve safety and capacity between Toowong and the CBD,” he said.

“The works will enhance access to Coronation Drive while promoting an important social and cultural connection with the Brisbane River.

“While Council endeavours to minimise impacts on all users of the Bicentennial Bikeway wherever possible during construction projects, I thank cyclists and pedestrians for their patience during the Western Creek replacement works.”
