Council honours 100+ Club members

15 July, 2014

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will today host some of Brisbane’s oldest residents for a High Tea at City Hall.

The Lord Mayor said the 100+ Club, available to people aged 100 years or older, is the only known club of its kind in the world.

“The club was formed by the Queensland Community Care Network and aims to enhance the social lives of its members and promote healthy aging,” Cr Quirk said.

“Now in its 21st year, the club is constantly growing and improving, with approximately 100 members across Queensland.

“Council is proud to support a club which promotes access and inclusion for the oldest members of our community.”

Eight centenarians are expected to attend from suburbs in and around Brisbane including Albion, Marsden, Broadbeach, Auchenflower and Strathpine.

Cr Quirk said the High Tea would also be attended by student representatives from the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council and Student Environmental Leadership Network to enjoy the valuable contributions that the centenarians make through their living history.

“As census data continues to show Australians are living longer, it’s important we continue to support seniors in their participation in our local communities,” he said.

“Council is committed to realising our vision of a friendly, safe city where our services, facilities and planning processes accommodate the needs of our oldest residents.

“I look forward to welcoming our centenarians to today’s event and I thank them for their ongoing contributions to the city of Brisbane.”
