Story Bridge glows gold for the Wallabies

05 June, 2014

Brisbane’s famed Story Bridge will turn golden on Saturday night to honour the Qantas Wallabies as they take on Les Bleus in the first match of the three-Test Castrol EDGE France Tour.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the lightshow would leave the Qantas Wallabies in no doubt of their strong fan base here when they take to the field at Suncorp Stadium.

“Lighting up the Story Bridge is part of our Show Your Colours campaign which celebrates a six-week feast of football in Brisbane,” Cr Quirk said.

“Its aim is to inspire locals and encourage visitors to make the most of the football season here. We want people to extend their stay and take advantage of all the festivities and extra activities on offer in Brisbane.

“Brisbane will give a big welcome to the French team and their supporters, but Wallabies fans will ensure the city is awash with green and gold for the match.

“When the Springboks played Australia in Brisbane last year, the event was estimated to have generated an economic value of $4.7 million and more than 9000 visitor nights for our hotels. I expect the outcome for this weekend will be just as good.

“Last time the Qantas Wallabies played Les Bleus at Suncorp Stadium in 2008 Australia won 40-10. Since then though the French were finalists in the 2011 Rugby World Cup, so I am expecting a much closer game on Saturday night.

“Tickets are still available from Ticketek too so I encourage rugby fans to get in quick to reserve their seats to support the Wallabies.”

Cr Quirk said the match was one of 19 the city would host across four football codes from late May – mid July. As well as rugby union, rugby league and Australian rules matches, Brisbane will celebrate the FIFA World Cup in June and July with live crosses from Brazil.

“I am calling on Brisbane businesses to dress up in support of their favourite team, no matter what the code or colour: dress up staff, building foyers, hotel receptions, work vehicles and more to Show Your Colours.”
