Brisbane is showing its colours

Football fever has arrived in Brisbane and Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is calling on residents to show their support for local teams by unleashing a sea of colour across the City.

The Lord Mayor said the Show your Colours campaign kicked off this morning with Carina Bus Depot winning the annual State of Origin bus decorating competition.

“State of Origin is a key date in Brisbane’s footy calendar and as part of spreading footy fever to all corners of the city we hold the annual bus decorating competition,” Cr Quirk said.

“Our drivers take this on with great enthusiasm and are some of our greatest ambassadors for sharing the origin spirit.

“However the bus decorating competition is just the start of Brisbane’s activation programs and visitors will see the city dressed in team colours between now and July, including buildings, bridges and key train stations.”

Cr Quirk said between now and July, Brisbane would play host to a multitude of big sporting events and welcome several waves of team supporters.

“This year Brisbane will host two of the three Origin matches with the first one being the 100th Origin game,” Cr Quirk said.

“The Show Your Colours campaign is about activating the city for locals and visitors alike during a time when there’s plenty of activity around the city.

“The action will span numerous national competition matches including the Brisbane Broncos and the Brisbane Lions as well as matches in the international Super 15 rugby competition involving the Queensland Reds.

“While the crowds of team supporters are here we are encouraging them to make the most of this season, to extend their stay and take advantage of our fun, vibrant city.”

For those who haven’t snagged a ticket to Suncorp Stadium, the screens at the Courier-Mail Piazza at South Bank will be broadcasting the Origin games.

Cr Quirk said there would also be a strong international flavour when the Australian Wallabies line up against their French counterparts in an electrifying rugby clash.

“The French haven’t played here since 2008 when Australia thumped them 40-10, so reputations will be on the line.”

The Show Your Colours campaign will conclude with the biggest single sporting event in the world, the FIFA World Cup.

King George Square will become Brisbane’s FIFA Live Site on 13 June with Brazilian music, dance, capoeira performances and live screenings of the games.

Cr Quirk encouraged Brisbane businesses to dress up in support of their favourite team, no matter what colour or code and be part of the Show Your Colours campaign.

The Bus decorating competition included entries from Brisbane’s seven bus depots at Willawong, Sherwood, Garden City, Carina, Eagle Farm, Toowong and Virginia featured in the competition.

The State of Origin-themed buses will continue in service for the next week.

Brisbane icons will light up over the next few months including the Story Bridge, King George Square and Reddacliff Place to support the Australian teams.
