Lord Mayor continues rollout of pedestrian countdown timers

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is continuing to install pedestrian countdown timers across Brisbane suburbs after the success of the project in Toowong, Fortitude Valley and the CBD.

Local Councillor Peter Matic said there would be pedestrian countdown timers installed at Sherwood Road and Jephson Street intersections in Toowong in January to help to make the areas safer for pedestrians.

“Pedestrians have been supportive of this project in other locations, with 74 per cent of pedestrians surveyed believing the timers will make it safer for them to cross and 84 per cent finding the technology useful,” Cr. Matic said.

“This further rollout is part of a $1 million commitment to install the devices over the next four years.

“We plan to upgrade approximately 100 signalised intersections during this time and by June 2014 the total number of intersections with pedestrian countdown timers is expected to be 48.”

Pedestrian countdown timers will be installed at the following locations:
• (EXAMPLE: Ann and Brunswick Streets – expected completion 7 January, 2014)

Council also has a proposed program to upgrade existing intersections with LED technology, including the installation of additional pedestrian countdown timers.

Cr Matic said pedestrian countdown timers count down the seconds pedestrians have to finish crossing once the red ‘Don’t Walk’ signal starts flashing, making it clear to pedestrians how much time they have left to finish crossing the road safely.

“Pedestrian countdown systems are used with great success in other world cities including New York, Toronto, London, Singapore, Dublin and San Francisco,” he said.

“As a new world city I believe it’s essential that our city is pedestrian friendly and facilitates the smooth flow of traffic, which the pedestrian countdown timers assist in achieving.

“We also hope to reduce the number of incidents of pedestrians remaining on the road when the red ‘Don’t Walk’ signal stops flashing and deter people from trying to run across the road at the last second.”
