Lord Mayor honours Brisbane’s outstanding citizens

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has extended his gratitude to the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day winners and nominees, including west-side residents Sonya Fisher who received an ‘Australia Day Sports Award’ and Dale Borgelt who received an ‘Achievement Award’.

The Lord Mayor said the deserving award recipients were extremely dedicated to their respective causes.

“Many of our award winners are quiet achievers who go about their work day in and day out unnoticed in our busy lives,” Cr Quirk said.

“These awards are about taking the time to ensure these remarkable individuals are appropriately recognised for their efforts and to thank them for helping make Brisbane an even better place for us all to live.”

Sonya Fisher (Bardon) is an outstanding volunteer with the Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association Inc. where she has held a number of volunteer positions.

Some of Sonya’s success include, coordinating a team of over 50 umpires, acting as treasurer for the association, tournament director of two state championships and acting as a hockey umpire.

Sonia has also been the driving force behind the HockeyZone television program, viewed on TV4ME in 2013.

The show will also appear on Foxtel Aurora and Bris 31 in 2014.

Dale Borgelt (Brookfield) is the key organiser of the Moggill Creek Catchment Group’s annual event, ‘Kids day at the Cottage’, which has been run annually since 2010.

In May 2013, this event attracted over 300 residents from the local community with half of the participants aged between 4 and 12 years.

These events encourage young participants to learn about and appreciate their local wildlife and its habitat.

“These winners have each in their own way selflessly reached out to others in our community and in doing so, they have not only made significant difference to the lives of individuals, but have also helped enrich our city,” Cr Quirk said.

Nominations ran between September and November 2013 and the awards were presented to recipients this week.
