Story Bridge light show signals the New Year

Brisbane’s Story Bridge will be lit up this New Year’s Eve with a ten-minute dynamic light show to accompany the city’s celebrations at 8.30pm and midnight.

Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the colourful light show would be a welcome addition to the fireworks displays which occur at South Bank over the Brisbane River.

“Adding to the spectacular light shows we’ve seen on the Story Bridge for Brisbane Festival and Christmas, the New Years’ Eve light show will be the icing on the cake to help bring in a bright 2014,” Cr Schrinner said.

“A countdown light effect will commence 10 seconds prior to the show at midnight.”

Cr Schrinner said the Story Bridge would be lit up in a festive amber colour prior to and following the shows.

He said the new LED Story Bridge lights that were switched on in June this year had a wide range of colours and dynamic lighting options to put on a great show.

“The new Story Bridge lighting was developed to highlight special events and causes, for example we might light it white for White Ribbon Day or put on an amazing show for events like Riverfire,” he said.

“The ease at which the colour of the lights can be changed is especially beneficial with so many organisations booking the lights.

“The old lights used gel inserts to create basic colours such as pink, red, green and blue – but the new LED lights can produce virtually any colour as well as special effects such as flashing.

“The lights are generated by light so as the sun goes down they fade up and when the sun comes up they fade down.”
