Go Between Bridge will be toll-free on New Year’s Eve

Queensland Motorways Group in partnership with Brisbane City Council have agreed to waive the tolls for travel across the Go Between Bridge during Brisbane’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the Go Between Bridge toll would be waived from 6pm on Tuesday, December 31 to 2am Wednesday, January 1.

Cr Schrinner said this would assist motorists move about the South Brisbane and West End areas, given the large number of road and bridge closures required for New Year’s events and associated fireworks displays.

“The toll free period during New Year’s Eve will help motorists enjoy a quicker trip to and from the festivities in and around South Bank,” Cr Schrinner said.

“The Go Between Bridge was constructed to help ease congestion by providing another river crossing in and out of South Brisbane, and New Year’s Eve presents the perfect opportunity for motorists to utilise the structure.

“Numerous road closures are essential to ensure the smooth-running of the much-loved community event so it is important for motorists to plan their travel around the changed traffic conditions.”

Cr Schrinner said the traffic lane closures would affect a number of inner-city streets including the Victoria Bridge, and as such motorists should consider alternatives such as the Go Between Bridge when travelling to and from the city’s best vantage points for the night.

“The city is always a popular place for people to celebrate New Year’s Eve, so be mindful that these areas will be busier than normal and that various road closures will be in place,” he said.

For residents and visitors taking public transport on the night, it’s recommended that you plan ahead where possible.

The Go Between Bridge is the most direct way to get between South Brisbane and the northern and western suburbs, with average time savings of up to 13 minutes during peak times.
