Council buses spread Christmas cheer

Brisbane’s best Christmas-themed bus will be judged by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk today, Tuesday 10 December, as part of Council’s annual bus decorating competition featuring buses from all seven Brisbane depots.

The Lord Mayor said the event, which first kicked off in 1994, featured buses decorated in a variety of themes ranging from ‘A Queensland Summer Christmas’ to ‘The friendliest bus company’.

“Each year staff from every Council depot in Brisbane are invited to decorate a bus in the spirit of the Christmas season,” Cr Quirk said.

“The bus decorating competition provides an excellent opportunity to spread Christmas cheer right across the city as these buses will remain decorated for the month of December.

“This year’s entries feature decorations including a traditional Christmas display, Indigenous paintings, stuffed animals, a cricket pitch and even photos of depot staff and their families enjoying the festive season.”

Cr Quirk said in 2012, Sherwood Bus Depot was awarded first place, followed closely by the Bowen Hills and Richlands depots.

“This year’s top spot will again be hotly contested – if last year’s creative entries are an indication of what we can expect,” he said.

“I applaud the ongoing efforts of all our depot staff and thank them in their quest to brighten up passengers’ travel through their eye-catching designs.

“Our CityCat staff have also added some decorative Christmas touches to the fleet in the spirit of the season so make sure you keep your eye out for those also.”

Cr Quirk said Council’s buses would spread further Christmas cheer next month (December) as they provided nightly tours of entries in the 4KQ Christmas Lights competition.

“From Monday, 16 December to Friday, 20 December, Council buses will transport residents between the homes of some of the competition participants,” he said.

The bus tours are approximately three hours in duration, with refreshment stops included. Tickets must be pre-purchased through Ticketek, not at bus-door. For ticket cost and to purchase tickets, visit www.ticketek.com.au or phone Ticketek on 132 849.

For more information, including departure times and locations, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or phone Council on (07) 3403 8888.
