Lord Mayor offers discount on Green Waste Recycling Service

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is offering Brisbane ratepayers the opportunity to order the Green Waste Recycling Service at a discounted rate for the month of October (October 1st – 31st).

The Lord Mayor said the once-a-year initiative was a great chance for residents to sign up to the service without having to pay the $30 establishment fee.

“This is about encouraging a clean and green city and this discount offer gives residents the perfect opportunity to sign up, make a difference and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill,” Cr Quirk said.

Cr Quirk said the initiative was timely to help residents prepare their properties for the seasonal hazards our city is prone to, including bushfires and storms.

“Severe storms can occur anytime from now until around March, and can result in property damage, power outages, isolation due to fallen powerlines and debris, and flash flooding,” Cr Quirk said.

“Bushfires are also a risk over the coming months especially with the current weather conditions, and residents can prepare by clearing and removing undergrowth near buildings and raking up bark, leaves and twigs.”

Cr Quirk said all green waste collected through the Green Waste Recycling Service was chipped and processed – ready for reuse as mulch and compost products.

“The initiative gives residents the chance to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, with a reduction of more than 31,000 tonnes of waste to landfill from residents who already signed up to this service,” he said.

“Since introducing this service over three years ago, more than 51,000 bins have been ordered by residents, showing residents are keen to do their bit for the environment.”

The green waste bins are collected fortnightly in alternation with recycling bins at a small service of $17.28 per quarter, which is charged hassle-free through rates notices.

Residents can place all their grass clippings, garden prunings, weeds and leaves in their green waste bin, which reduces the amount of waste ending up in landfill.

Green waste bins are 240 litres with a lime green lid, and are collected fortnightly in the alternate week to your recycling bin.

To sign up for the Green Waste Recycling Service, visit Council’s website at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/waste or phone Council on 3403 8888. Remember to have your current Rate Account information handy. Tenants will need approval from their landlord if they wish to order the service. [Ends] SEPTEMBER 30, 2013
