Toowong hosts bands in parks

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is hosting a free band performance in Toowong on Sunday, 1 September as part of Council’s 2013 Bands in Parks program.

Cr Peter Matic (Toowong Ward) said the Bands in Parks events were a unique way to enjoy some of Brisbane’s best loved music and green spaces.

“Spring is here and Windsor Brass will celebrate the new season with an exuberant and energetic selection of music including Shout, Stayin’ Alive, Sway and Swing When You’re Winning,” Cr Matic said.

“These free events are designed to celebrate Brisbane's outdoor spaces and cultural lifestyle, and what better way to do that than amongst the beautiful surrounds of some of our 2,000 parks across the city.

“Council’s Bands in Parks program engages approximately 3,000 musicians over 130 performances each year and is another way we are working towards delivering the Lord Mayor’s vision for a vibrant, creative city.”

Brisbane community bands have been associated with Council prior to World War 1, with both brass and military bands being part of the cultural life of Brisbane since its early days.

The Bands in Parks program is presented by Brisbane City Council and produced by Brisbane Metropolitan Bands, which was formed in the 1930s to represent bands and to co-ordinate their performances.
