Lord Mayor launches multilingual guide to Brisbane

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has launched a series of multilingual videos to promote Brisbane to new residents at Brisbane City Council’s stand at the EKKA.

Cr Quirk said that as well as providing a general introduction to Brisbane, the video series sheds light on topics such as transport, waste and recycling and community engagement.

“My administration is focussed on ensuring new multicultural residents feel welcome and are given a helpful introduction to the city through these series of multilingual videos,” he said.

“Produced in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Korean and Arabic as well as English, these videos demonstrate my commitment to ensuring Brisbane is a dynamic and welcoming city.

“The multilingual videos provide a new level of support for the 16 per cent of Brisbane households who speak a language other than English, new migrants and about 72,000 international students, as well as international tourists.

“Projects such as this show Council’s commitment to nurturing a cohesive and inclusive city and helping people connect.”

Cr Quirk said the videos showcased Brisbane as a vibrant new world city and provided new residents with a brief introduction to the city, Council’s key programs and services.

He said multicultural organisations such as the Multicultural Development Association, 4EB community radio and 2M language services were consulted during the production of the video series to translate voiceovers and ensure the content was culturally appropriate.

The online videos complement the existing multilingual 18-page Brisbane Residents Guide, which provides new residents with information on the history of the city, Council’s programs and services and community activities, also available on Council’s website.”

To view the videos, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or connect with Council on Facebook via www.facebook.com/BrisbaneCityCouncil.
