North side artists to benefit from Council grants

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will provide close to $40,000 to create professional opportunities for north side artists aged between 17 and 30.

The Lord Mayor said the Young and Emerging Artists Fellowships grant program was about developing and nurturing the talents of some of Brisbane’s most creative residents.

“There is a wealth of talent in our city and through these grants we can provide the necessary financial support needed to transform an emerging artist with good ideas into a successful creative career,” Cr Quirk said.

“This initiative will create projects that enrich our communities and enhance Brisbane’s reputation as Australia’s New World City.”

The recipients of the Lord Mayor’s Young and Emerging Artists Fellowships grants will be able to use the financial assistance to take advantage of career development opportunities both in Australia and overseas.

Comedy duo Catherin Sagin, from Newmarket, and Kate Woodcroft, of Petrie Terrace, have been awarded $19,998 to undertake training and research in the United States where they’ll explore the intersection between comedy and contemporary arts.

Theatre artist Jeremy Neideck from Albion has been granted $19,994 to undertake mentorships and training to develop transcultural theatre practice with other artists from Brisbane, Seoul and the Torres Strait.

Council will provide a total of $60,588 in grants to four recipients of the 2012/2013 Lord Mayor’s Young and Emerging Artists Fellowships.
