Council improves Toowong cyclist, pedestrian lighting
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is improving visibility and safety along sections of the pathway in Anzac Park, Toowong, with a new lighting project scheduled to commence next week (w/c May 13).
Local Councillor Peter Matic (Toowong Ward) said the $90,000 project would involve installing six new light poles along the existing pathway.
“This project is about recognising the benefits active transport has on health, the environment and congestion reduction,” Cr Matic said.
“Across Brisbane we now have more than 1,100 kilometres of bikeways spread across the city and it’s important that the bikeway network is well lit and offers appropriate visibility.
“This Anzac Park lighting upgrade is part of the Lord Mayor’s $120 million investment for the Better Bikeways 4 Brisbane program, which supports the upgrades of existing facilities and the building of new pathways.”
The Anzac Park project is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting.
Cr Matic said the project was part of a wider bikeway lighting improvement program across the city.
“By the end of this financial year, Council anticipates it will have also completed an upgrade of lighting along the Kangaroo Point cliffs pathway at Kangaroo Point, O’Connell Terrace in Bowen Hills and Bulimba Creek bikeway, weather permitting.”
The Lord Mayor’s record investment of $120 million for bikeways comes on top of a further $8.5 million budgeted for bikeway repairs, which includes about $2 million for this financial year.
