More than 1,300 helped at Homeless Connect

Brisbane City Council reached out to more than 1,300 homeless people at the 13th Homeless Connect event at the RNA Showgrounds yesterday.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the event was a way for Council to reach out to the region’s homeless and those at risk.

“Homeless Connect provides Brisbane’s homeless people with necessities and services, such as warm clothes and health checks,” Cr Quirk said.

“Just as importantly, the event sends people the message that someone cares - support services are out there, and help is available to get them back on their feet.

“There are many Council programs and community organisations in Brisbane ready to help them find housing, take care of their health and find jobs.”

Cr Quirk said that 1,000 bags filled with toiletries and non-perishable food were distributed to guests throughout the event.

“The bags were filled by the generous donations of Brisbane residents and Foodbank, which provided eight pallets of non-perishable food items and toiletries,” he said.

“I’m thankful to the hundreds of volunteers who put their hand up to help out with this great cause.”

Along with the distribution of donation bags, more than 50 pallets of donated clothing and manchester were handed out, and 1,000 meals were served to guests.

The volunteers included a range of health professionals, giving guests the opportunity to keep their health in check, with around 100 doctor consultations, 59 dental checks and 40 optical appointments. Further free services included more than 200 haircuts, 46 immunisations and 49 podiatrist consultations.

Homeless Connect 2013 included:
• 1,300 Guests (700+ male, 500 female, 100 children)
• Haircuts 200+
• Vaccinations 46
• Optometrists 40
