Beautification works in Paddington set to blossom

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has announced a beautification project for Paddington, with more than 100 shade-producing street trees and new gardens to be added along the popular areas of Given and Latrobe Terraces.

The Lord Mayor said early works on the Paddington Ridge Boulevard project would begin week commencing 17th March (weather permitting), with main planting works scheduled for April.

“This $1.2 million beautification project will create more tree-lined boulevards in the Paddington area and provide a continuous canopy of shade for residents and visitors,” Cr Quirk said.

“It will enhance an area stretching from Given Terrace through to Latrobe Terrace with the planting of 100 water-wise and shade-producing street trees, along with new garden beds.

“We will also be removing some unhealthy and damaged trees and replacing them with mature trees to provide instant shade.”

Cr Quirk said the project would reinforce the distinctive character and pedestrian experience of the area.

“This project is part of my vision for a clean and green city, to deliver subtropical colour for this popular precinct,” he said.

He said a variety of tree species would be planted including Kauri Pines, Queensland Maples, Silver and Pink Trumpet Trees and Tulipwoods.

Before planting begins, the early works will involve widening the footpath at the intersections of Given Terrace and George and Princess Streets to ensure the pedestrian crossing is more accessible.

Works will commence at the Castlemaine Street end of the project area. The project is expected to be completed in October 2013, weather permitting.
