Council boosts free inner-city motorcycle parking

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is delivering additional free inner-city motorcycle and scooter parking for Brisbane residents, today announcing the 100th new parking space installed in the CBD.
Deputy Mayor and Infrastructure Chairman Adrian Schrinner said the new free spaces had been installed in eight locations across the city, South Brisbane and Fortitude Valley, boosting the number of free inner city spaces for motorcyclists and scooter riders to over 700.
“Providing more inner-city motorcycle parks is about meeting the growing demand for these types of vehicles and ensuring our city is as accessible as possible,” Cr Schrinner said.
“We know that both motorcycles and scooters are increasing in popularity, with the number of Brisbane registrations increasing by nearly 30 per cent over the past five years.
“This is why the Lord Mayor committed to delivering 100 free motorcycle parking spaces each year from 2012 to 2016.”
Cr Schrinner said the installation of new parking spots did not mean any net loss of car parking spaces.
“We’ve expanded locations that already offer motorcycle parking including those on Turbot Street in the CBD, which has been regularly operating at full capacity,” he said.
“We have also maximised unused off-road space for the majority of our new motorcycle parks, meaning they do not come at a loss of car parking facilities.”

The free motorcycle spaces have been rolled out to new locations including:
• Annerley Road between Park Road and Park Road West, Dutton Park
• North Quay between Tank and Turbot Street, Brisbane City
• Little Street, Fortitude Valley

The project also increased the number of free motorcycle parks available at the following locations:
• Corner of Brereton Street and Montague Road, South Brisbane
• Corner of Queens Wharf Road and William Street, Brisbane City
• Hope Street between Fish Lane and Peel Street, South Brisbane
• Corner of Turbot and Wharf Street, Brisbane City
• Constance Street corner of Green Square Close, Fortitude Valley

Department of Transport and Main Roads figures show a total of 25,631 motorcycles and scooters were registered in the Brisbane City Council area in 2007, with registrations in January 2013 totalling 31,942.
