Draft new City Plan consultation launched

08 February, 2013

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has begun consultation for the draft new City Plan, revealing a packed program of more than 70 information sessions city wide.

Cr Quirk said the information sessions would be held in every corner of the city between 12 February and 28 May, to give residents, community groups and businesses an opportunity to learn more about the draft plan and to hear their views.

“Since December last year more than 7,400 people have viewed the draft plan online,” Cr Quirk said.

“We’re pleased to have had so much interest to date, because planning is all about working with the community to develop a blueprint for growth, stimulate our economy, preserve Brisbane’s character and meet the changing needs of residents and businesses.

“The draft new City Plan is an exercise in direct democracy, where people vote on the policy initiatives directly. So this plan will be based on the views and opinions of the 60,000 people who contributed to CityShape, the thousands involved in neighbourhood planning since 2006, and of course the consultation taking place this year.”

There will be more than 40 information sessions in libraries and shopping centres and eight in-depth ‘Talk to a Planner’ sessions. There will also be four business forums, several industry-specific forums and community group information talks.

“We are holding these information and feedback events because we understand that everyone who lives and works in Brisbane has a vested interest in the draft plan, and managing Brisbane’s growth,” Cr Quirk said.

He said ongoing dialogue with residents about the draft plan was important, and a second period of consultation would take place later in the year after the draft plan had been returned from State Government.

Feedback is welcome throughout the consultation period and residents are asked to get in touch with Council if they have any feedback.
