Lord Mayor announces free music downloads at Council libraries

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has announced Brisbane City Council library members now have access to more than three million songs able to be downloaded free of charge.

The Lord Mayor said members could download and keep up to three music tracks per week by simply logging in with their library membership card number.

“As part of our vision for a New World City, we are keeping up with online trends and this service is one of the ways we are expanding the breadth of web resources available to customers at Brisbane’s libraries,” Cr Quirk said.

Council’s libraries have subscribed to the downloadable music service ‘Freegal’, which gives library customers access to free songs from the Sony music collection in a safe and legal online environment.

The files are available for download in MP3 format, won’t expire, and can be transferred to iPods, MP3 players or burnt to CD.

Once the download counter has reset each Monday at 4:01pm in Brisbane, customers can download another three songs.

“Our libraries are inclusive community hubs and this service adds to the fantastic range of facilities we already offer residents to enjoy at no charge including iPads, Xboxes, computers and free WiFi access,” Cr Quirk said.

Library members can download the app for iOS or Android, or visit the ‘eBooks and Downloads’ page of the online library catalogue, eLibCat.

There are three simple steps to get started when using the website:
• Login to Freegal Music with your library card number and pin number
• Search the collection and preview songs
• Once you log in click on Download Now - the song is yours
