Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will lend council staff and volunteers a hand filling sandbags ahead of tonight's potential flooding in riverside suburbs.

He is also encouraging residents to follow some simple tips for the sandbags to ensure they have the best chance of keeping out water:
1. Stack sandbags as you would when stacking bricks – offset the rows so the placement of the joints is staggered
2. With sandbags, it’s best to offset each row by half a bag
3. Make sure each row lies as flat as possible
4. If it is safe to do so, compress each row of sandbags by stepping across the row. This helps to fill voids and prevents slippage when the next row is placed on top.

Full fact sheet on sandbagging attached for distribution on media websites.
