Free travel on the Go Between Bridge for Riverfire

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is helping to ease congestion during Saturday’s Riverfire celebrations by waiving the toll for motorists travelling across the Go Between Bridge.

The Lord Mayor said the Go Between Bridge would be toll-free from 4pm to midnight on Saturday, September 29.

Cr Quirk said this was to help motorists, particularly local residents, get in and out of the South Bank/ South Brisbane/ West End area with minimal hassle given the large number of road and bridge closures required for tomorrow night’s Riverfire event.

He said motorists could visit http://www.brisbanefestival.com.au/content/about-brisbane-festival/information-for-sunsuper-riverfire for the full list of road closures and traffic changes.

However Cr Quirk stressed the best way to get to and from Riverfire celebrations was by catching public transport.

“We built the Go Between Bridge specifically to help reduce congestion by providing another river crossing in and out of South Brisbane and Riverfire presents the perfect opportunity for motorists to give it a go,” Cr Quirk said.

“Riverfire is a fantastic community event that brings this city together and these closures are necessary to ensure that happens safely and efficiently.

“I encourage anybody attending Riverfire to catch public transport where possible, however if you do need to use your car at all tomorrow night then please plan ahead and be mindful of these traffic changes.”

Cr Quirk said the majority of closures would include road closures in parts of the CBD, Valley, Kangaroo Point and South Brisbane and traffic changes on inner city bridges including the Story and Victoria Bridges.

The Go Between Bridge is the most direct way to get between South Brisbane and the northern and western suburbs, with average time savings up to 13 minutes during peak times.

Those travelling to and from South Bank for Riverfire are encouraged to plan their trip using public transport, where possible. To find out more, call TransLink on 13 12 30 or visit www.translink.com.au.
