Lord Mayor invites families to join 2012 Children’s Book Week

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is encouraging Brisbane children and their families to get involved in reading and writing as part of this year’s Children’s Book Week.

Local Councillor Peter Matic (Toowong Ward) said the highly-anticipated event was now in its 67th year, making it the longest running children’s festival in Australia.

“This is about celebrating talented Australian authors and illustrators and promoting literacy to our youth,” Cr Matic said.

“Making our libraries community hubs for learning is part of the Lord Mayor’s commitment to delivering a smart and prosperous city.”

Libraries will host a week-long program of more than 20 activities to encourage children to interact with authors and illustrators, from learning about the mysteries and magic of mummies, to a quest for the perfect alphabet pizza.

For the younger children, there will be babies, books and rhymes sessions, toddler time and children’s story time.

Families can join Brisbane author Michelle Worthington as she reads from her new picture book The Bedtime Band – a story of what animals in the Australian bush get up to when children are at home asleep in their beds.

Another local author Ryll Paul, will tell the story of her new picture book Friends of the Flood at several sessions over the week and illustrator Brendan McIntyre, will take children on a journey of drawing and creation in interactive workshops using traditional drawing methods

The 2012 Children’s Book Week runs from Saturday 18 to Friday 24 August.
