Lord Mayor invites City Hall time capsule contributions

31 July, 2012

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is inviting residents to be a part of the $215 million City Hall restoration story by contributing to the Brisbane 2012 Time Capsule.

The Lord Mayor said the time capsule would be placed in the City Hall auditorium next year, following the renovations.

“We are getting on with the job of fixing this iconic heritage building and delivering it back to the people of Brisbane with modern building and safety standards,” Cr Quirk said.

“It is pleasing to see the project really taking shape now and it’s fantastic to see so many unused spaces such as the Old Library being restored and available as function rooms so more people can use City Hall.”

The Lord Mayor said the time capsule would be reopened in 2059 to coincide with Queensland’s 200th birthday celebrations.

“City Hall has had a number of capsules over the years, but never before has all of Brisbane been invited to leave their own family legacy within the building,” said Cr Quirk.

“This project is about preserving our city’s history, with the stories we’ve received to date including family life, local events, favourite places to visit and charity work.

“We want as many people as possible to get involved so we can create a snapshot of life in Brisbane as we know it today.”

Brisbane residents are encouraged to go to the Brisbane City Council website and upload an image plus short story of up to 200 words about their life in Brisbane in the year 2012. Alternatively residents can post their submission by phoning Council for a ‘Your City Your Say’ newsletter and reply paid envelope on 3403 8888.

Submissions are open until 31 December, with the stories then packaged into a book for the time capsule.
