Matic paves the way in Toowong Ward

29 June, 2012

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is making Brisbane’s footpaths safer and more accessible with a footpath upgrade in the inner city finished last month.

Local councillor Peter Matic (Toowong Ward) said the Lord Mayor had allocated $35,000 to upgrade the footpath along Sheriff Street in Brisbane.

“I share the Lord Mayor’s vision to make Brisbane a safer and accessible city and building new footpaths will make a big difference in helping to achieve that goal,” Cr Matic said.

“This is about providing attractive alternatives for active travel and making Brisbane’s footpaths safer for all residents to enjoy.”

Cr Matic said the 2012/13 financial year budget includes a Ward Parks and Footpath Trust which has been allocated to each councillor to spend on improvements across the city.

“Each Ward has been given $398,000 to build new footpaths and make local park improvements in their areas, as well as $19.7 million across the city towards footpath maintenance and rehabilitation works which has allowed me to deliver projects like Sheriff Street for Toowong Ward,” Cr Matic said.

Cr Matic said Council has also allocated $2.3 million in the 2012/13 Budget in support of Council’s 12 reactive maintenance crews called “flying gangs” enabling them to get on with the job of fixing cracked footpaths quickly.

“I’m committed to delivering vital infrastructure for Toowong Ward and local residents will notice a difference once these footpath upgrades are complete,” Cr Matic said.

Figures released last year showed the number of cracked footpaths in Brisbane had dropped by around 1000 kilometres in just three years thanks to Lord Mayor Graham Quirk’s record investment in footpath maintenance.
