Lord Mayor encourages young readers to ‘go for gold’

11 July, 2012

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is reminding primary school students there’s still time to take part in the fifth annual Gold Star Reading Club program, currently taking place at Council libraries.

Cr Quirk said the free Council program ran until the end of August and was designed to develop students’ literacy skills by rewarding them for their reading achievements.

“The Gold Star Reading Club attracted an impressive 6,479 participants last year, which demonstrates how popular this initiative is,” Cr Quirk said.

“Encouraging better literacy and general knowledge through reading is part of my vision for a more accessible and inclusive city.”

Gold Star participants are challenged to read two books per month and record them in their ‘Activity Book’ issued at the start of the program.

The students are rewarded with a certificate of achievement and a gold star medallion at the end of the program, plus also go into the draw to win regular prizes, including book vouchers for individuals and their school.

Council’s 33 libraries are modern, comfortable and vibrant community hubs that attract more than 500,000 visitors per month borrowing nearly one million items.

Library resources include free meeting rooms, workshops and seminars, 290 Internet-accessible computers for free member use and WiFi access.

To register your child for the 2012 Gold Star Reading Club, visit your local library and complete a registration form.
