Lord Mayor returns Post Office Square to former glory

07 February, 2012

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has announced Post Office Square is well on its way to being fully restored following the laying of new turf in the wake of the Occupy Brisbane protest.

The square was badly damaged during the protest, which saw a group of people camping in the popular green space for two weeks in November 2011– ruining the grass and disrupting local business.

The Lord Mayor said it was great to see Post Office Square so close to being repaired, and looked forward to seeing it filled with people enjoying the sunshine in coming weeks.

“I am all for free speech but the extreme members of the Occupy Brisbane protest were frankly only interested in being a nuisance to the 99 per cent of Brisbane who were very patient with them for many days,” Cr Quirk said.

“Any fines levied upon them during the protest movement have been allocated to the repair costs of Post Office Square.”

Council is investing up to $30,000 to replace 1500 square metres of turf and undertake pressure cleaning of concrete bounding the square, which is located between Queen and Adelaide streets in Brisbane’s CBD.

Officers have now finished laying Sir Walter turf in the square, and the grass will now be given time to grow into a lush green finish.

“It’s important that we now take the time to make sure the grass grows back properly after having to make this substantial investment in repairing it,” Cr Quirk said.

Weather permitting, Post Office Square will reopen to the public by mid-March.
