Council seeks feedback on mountain biking

06 February, 2009

Brisbane City Council wants to know what you think about mountain biking in Brisbane.

Environment, Parks and Sustainability Chair Peter Matic today announced Council had launched an on-line consultation between February 6 and April 24.

Cr Matic said the survey would help establish what people wanted from green and open spaces and whether mountain biking would be suitable for these spaces.

Currently bike riding is only permitted within Mt Coot-tha Forest on designated trails.

“So far, we’ve heard from parts of the mountain biking community and environmentalists – now we’re undertaking this survey so we can hear from the wider community,” Cr Matic said.

“While mountain biking is a key issue, the questionnaire addresses the bigger picture of what people want from their green and open spaces.

“We all have diverse interests. While some people like to have barbecues and walks in their parks, others want to be more active - running or mountain biking.”

Cr Matic said sustaining and protecting public green and open spaces would always be Council’s priority.

“The challenge will be to balance recreational facilities with environmental conservation,’ Cr Matic said.

“The questionnaires will enable Council to find out what activities people do, and also what they would like to be able to do in these spaces.”

Currently Council manages over 2545 hectares of bushland across the city, and is seeking to secure an additional 500 hectares by 2012.

People can visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au from Friday February 6 to fill out the questionnaire and provide Council with feedback.
