Lighting completed on Toowong pathway

16 June, 2010

Council has completed construction on new overhead lighting in Oakman Park, Toowong.

The $220,000 project was part of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s $100 million investment in Brisbane’s cycle network, which includes the provision of new shared paths, missing links, lighting, improved safety and directional signage and bike parking facilities.

Local Councillor Peter Matic (Toowong Ward) said the work involved the installation of continuous, overhead lighting along a 450 metre stretch of existing pathway that joins Miskin Street and Moggill Road in Toowong.

“The new lighting allows for safer night-time travel for both pedestrians and cyclists on this busy shared pathway,” Cr Matic said.

“The lights not only provide an obvious increase in visibility to prevent accidents after dark, but also help to light unsafe areas as a deterrent for crime and anti-social behaviour.

“As students from neighbouring Brisbane Boys College and users of the nearby football field also frequent this path, the lights are an important and welcome addition to the park.”

Cr Matic said the estimated $220,000 project was fully funded by Council, and has been completed four weeks ahead of schedule.

“Works such as this lighting project will provide the community with more accessible and enjoyable cycling infrastructure, bringing us closer to achieving a clean, green and connected Brisbane,” Cr Matic said.

“A recent survey has found that usage on Council’s shared pathway network has increased by approximately 29 per cent on weekdays and 59 per cent on weekends between 2004 and 2008, which demonstrates the importance of ongoing investment in active transport infrastructure.”
